Medical Missions
Each year BASM conducts medical missions to the Camarines Norte province of the Philippines. These missions include approximately 30 BASM volunteers, most of whom are Kaiser Permanente employees. In a typical week-long mission, BASM volunteers perform approximately 250 surgeries. The procedures are often life-altering for patients and their families.
Referrals from local doctors, local radio announcements and word of mouth drive patient participation. Patients are carefully screened to ensure proper care is provided. We treat common conditions such as ovarian cysts, cleft palates, enlarged thyroids, hernias, tumors, cataracts, appendicitis and other afflictions. As these conditions progress unchecked, they often become debilitating or life-threatening.
In addition, BASM has made it a practice to provide support and care to patients beyond our missions. Specifically, BASM volunteers work to secure local follow-up care for patients in need of ongoing therapy.
We depend on donations to support our work to improve the lives of our patients.
